Yesterday an atheist walked by the hotel. He was wearing a shirt letting the world know it’s okay to be an atheist, okay not to believe in god. That may have been the end of it, but he started talking to a friend of his right in front of my podium, and I had the opportunity to hear him share a laugh when he told his friend how he had ruffled some feathers by wearing a shirt that said “Axial Tilt is the Reason for the Season.” Ha ha, kind of clever. We Christians seem to parody enough slogans and hijack them for God, that I suppose we had it coming. In fact, I appreciate the humor. Of course, if he means the season, winter, it’s certainly true enough. But if he means the season, Christmastime–which is generally what is meant when shirts say Jesus is the reason for the season–he has a much harder case to make.
But I would like to have just a little fun with the atheist by showing up in a shirt that says, “Jesus is the Reason for Axial Tilt.” Because he is, you know. Jesus is the creator, and seasons were his idea. And a good idea they were, too. And the mechanisms for bringing about seasons were his design. Jesus decided to tilt the earth 23 degrees from vertical, he decided to make the sun 9,900° F on its surface and place us 93,000,000 miles away from it. In fact, we can exalt Jesus all the more, the more we learn about his matchless wisdom and masterful craftsmanship. So follow this link for a brief and simple explanation of the seasons, and glorify the Creator who is not only the reason for winter, spring, summer, and fall, but entered into time-space once upon a time to save his people from their sins and who is the reason for this Season of festive Christian celebration. Happy winter solstice.
